How to synchronise your cameras for a wedding shoot

There are two good ways to synchronise your cameras. We’ve tried and tested both.

The way where you remembered

Set your camera clock to the time of a reliable clock (we use leapsecond.com). Repeat for all your cameras. Do this before you start the event.

Things to consider

  1. If you are geotagging your images you might want to set the time to GPS time.
  2. Some cameras don’t allow you to set the seconds. Set the time to a whole minute. This will avoid image drift.

The way where you forgot

Don’t panic, there is a way. Take a photograph of an accurate time source, such as leapsecond.com. Repeat with every camera.

You may need to change a few steps depending on your software - I use Lightroom.

  1. Import your images to your catalog (you are using Lightroom or Capture One, right?)
  2. Isolate each camera then find the photo of the time source that you took.
  3. In grid view select that image then press ctrl+a or cmd+a to highlight all images.
  4. In the Menu select Metadata > Edit Capture time.
  5. With the “Adjust to a specified date and time” option selected change the corrected time to the time in the photo
  6. Repeat this for every camera that you need to synchronise.

Ta-da, now you have all your images in chronological order!
